Vitiligo Clinical Trials: What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a long-term skin condition characterized by the loss of pigmentation, resulting in patches of depigmented or white skin. It occurs when the melanocytes, which are the cells responsible for producing melanin (the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes), are destroyed or stop functioning properly. The exact cause of vitiligo is not known, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the melanocytes.

Vitiligo can affect people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities, and its progression and severity can vary from person to person. The condition typically starts with small, pale patches of skin that may gradually enlarge and spread over time. The patches can appear anywhere on the body, including the face, hands, feet, arms, legs, and genital area. In some cases, vitiligo may also affect the hair, resulting in the loss of color or whitening of the hair in the affected areas.
